How does it work?

The treatment is continuous until your final potatoes leave the store. Using the Restrain generator and sensor, a very low ethylene gas concentration is delivered. The dynamic ethylene gas, is about the same weight as air and will evenly spread to all your potatoes in either bulk or wooden bins store. 

The generated low ethylene concentration is automatically monitored in the store. During the storage time the ethylene production by the Restrain generator stops when it reaches a maximum level, and produces ethylene again once the minimum level is detected. Potatoes require 3 days ethylene exposure before the sprouts are blocked. If your potatoes have already sprouted, the ethylene gas will block further cell elongation. Daily fresh air intake to reduce the CO2 levels does not harm the obtained dormancy of the potatoes. 

Generally our technology will not call for you to adjust your cold store. Our generators need only a cold store that is not too leaky. If the store is too open, it is impossible to maintain the required minimum levels of ethylene gas during storage.

Anti-sprouting is based on maintaining during storage a certain level of ethylene gas.If these levels are not met, then the anti sprouting results will be negative.

Table & processing potatoes

Whether you store bulk, in big bags, wooden bins or jute bags. The ethylene gas will spread through the whole crop.

During storage season it is important to maintain a from start to finish a specific low concentration of ethylene gas in your cold store.

The Restrain Generator is preset to maintain the required level of ethylene.

The various levels of ethylene required during storage are controlled by the Restrain Sensor.

The natural ethylene gas suppresses the cell elongation, called anti sprout control.

Absolutely no chemicals are added, just a 100% natural blockage of growth due to the ethylene concentration within your store.

The ethylene gas is produced from pure ethanol (alcohol) inside the Restrain Generator using a heated catalyst.

The Restrain Sensor is placed in the airflow on top of the potatoes and signals to the generator if it requires more ethylene gas.

Before starting the ethylene regime you will need to ensure that all potatoes are in the store. The potatoes will be slowly exposed to a limited amount of ethylene gas. This is pre-programmed by the Restrain Generator.

You can load batches from your cold store at any time. The ethylene concentrations will be built up again once the doors of your store are shut again.

Due to the slow respiration of ethylene out of the potatoes, you can open the doors at any time without any negative effects.

Seed Potatoes

The treatment of seed potatoes with ethylene gives growers more flexibility in Spring. The seed can be placed back into storage after grading or if the weather unexpectedly changes.

Trials have also shown that ethylene increases numbers and yield.

With Restrain Accumulator the apical dominance in seed potatoes can be blocked. The system generates extra yield for seed, table and processing potatoes with the benefits proven since 2004.

With Restrain Accumulator treatment during the storage you will generate a bigger yield through more tubers per plant and a better grading in the cultivation. Further with Restrain ethylene it enables seed potatoes to be stored in warmer conditions without the risk of unwanted early sprouting.

More yield.

Depending on the potato variety and growing conditions up to 20% more tubers per plant can be achieved and emergence is more uniform. More sprouts per seed tube generate more stems. As a result you will get more evenly graded potatoes.

Protocol

The minimum Restrain Accumulator post-harvest ethylene application is 90 days. During the storage time it is crucial to monitor the CO2 level. Daily flushing with fresh air is required.
Note: 5 days before planting stop the ethylene treatment.
